The San Diego Padres placed left-hander Brandon Higelin on the disabled list and signed right-hander Cody Smith, assigning him to the Lake Elsinore Storm.

One day after tossing a three-inning gem, left-hander Brandon Higelin was placed on the disabled list.

Higelin earned his first career save on Monday and tossed three perfect innings. For the season, the southpaw is 0-3 with a 4.32 ERA over 17 appearances. In 25 innings with Lake Elsinore, Higelin has allowed 32 hits while walking 12.

Cody Smith joins the Storm after being released by the Kansas City Royals last week. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Texas Rangers, Smith went 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA over 10 games for Double-A Wichita this year. He allowed runs in seven of his 10 outings as the opposition hit .361 off him.

Smith came into the season with a 22-9 record and 3.444 ERA over 122 appearances, including 44 starts. Last year, Smith went 9-0 in Double-A, posting a 2.71 ERA over 86.1 innings.
