Demotions and promotions

Ray Chang

The San Diego Padres juggled some prospects around within their minor league system on Friday, demoting shortstops Luis Cruz and Juan Ciriaco, promoting Ray Chang to Portland from Lake Elsinore and promoting Frank Brooks from Double-A to Triple-A.

Luis Cruz, 23, batted .169 with 15 runs scored, 10 doubles, five home runs and 17 RBIs in 44 games with the Beavers.

Frank Brooks, a nine-year professional, was 2-1 with a 2.01 ERA, 26 strikeouts and one save in 17 relief appearances with the Missions. The 28-year-old has played parts of two seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh (2004) and Atlanta (2005), and signed with the Padres as a minor league free agent on Nov. 8, 2006.

In 21 games with the Storm, Ray Chang, 23, was batting .304 with one home run and eight RBIs. Chang made his Triple-A debut with the Beavers in 2006, batting .222 with one home run and two RBIs in 12 games. He signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on July 4, 2005.

Juan Ciriaco was batting .160 with four doubles and 13 runs scored over 37 games with Double-A San Antonio. He had swiped five bags but had just 21 hits in 131 at bats.
