Portland, OR-- On another cold, wet night at PGE Park in Portland that delayed action for an hour, the Beavers turned to left-hander Ryan Ketchner who had been winless on the season. It came on a day that witnessed the loss of slugger Jack Cust in a trade to Oakland and pitching hopeful Cesar Carrillo to an injury that might result in season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Ryan Ketchner, despite throwing 51 pitches over the first two innings, limited Salt Lake hitters to two hits and just one run through five innings of work, while striking out a season high eight batters. Ketchner retired 15 of the last 17 Bees hitters he faced, throwing 93 pitches and making effective use of a changeup. Both hits off Ketchner came in the first inning before he settled down.

“He rectified what he did in the first inning to cause the run,” pitching coach Gary Lance said. “He is not the type of pitcher who can pitch past a hitter. He righted the ship and kept us close.”

A stalwart Henry Bonilla seemingly matched Ketchner’s efforts. Bonilla pitched six innings for the Bees while only surrendering three hits and three walks and merely one run.

The game remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when an unearned run proved to be the deciding factor. Luke Carlin led of the inning with an infield hit and two consecutive Salt Lake miscues allowed Carlin to reach third base. Josh Howard then grounded into a 5-6-3 double play that scored Carlin and proved to be the deciding run in the 2-1 victory

Winning pitcher Scott Strickland pitched two solid innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three while picking up his PCL-leading fourth win. Fireballer Andrew Brown lead off the eighth inning by beaning the first batter he faced, but settled down quickly to work a hitless, scoreless inning.

Beavers closer Leo Rosales worked his way out of a ninth inning jam to acquire his seventh save in as many opportunities.
