The Beavers finished the homestand 5-3 and improving to 7-9 on the season.
The 17 runs put on the board by the Beavers set a modern franchise record. Three Beaver triples and eight doubles both tied the modern franchise marks. Of the Beavers’ 19 hits, 13 were for extra bases. Despite striking out three times, slugger Jack Cust roped two roundtrippers and racked up four RBIs. It was Cust’s second multi-homer game of the homestand and his seventh in the last two years. All of Cust’s six PCL leading homeruns were hit in the opening eight game homestand.
Seven Portland hitters had multi-hit games including three players with three hits. In the third inning, which proved to be Portland’s most damaging, six consecutive batters reached on hits following Cust’s first homerun of the night. Luis Cruz hit a double in three consecutive innings and Luke Carlin reached base in four consecutive innings. Six Beavers had multiple RBI games. Oscar Robles and returning infielder Brian Myrow had three RBIs apiece.
On the defensive side of things, pitcher Jack Cassel put in six decent innings, despite the Beavers looking a bit weary, committing three errors and making a sequence of poor plays. In the top of the third inning, Cassel made a pick-off attempt to second and threw the ball at least two yards to the right of the bag. An unknowing Eric Barton remained on the base. On the next pitch, Cassel threw in the dirt as Luke Carlin made a nice stop. It appeared Barton was to be caught in a rundown, but poor decision making allowed Barton to steal third. Despite a few rocky moments, Cassel retired the Rivercats in order in the fourth and fifth innings. In total, the right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out six.
The crowd of 3,036 at PGE Park reveled in the incendiary offensive onslaught as the Beavers prepared for their second roadstand of the 2007 season.
