Portland holds on in the ninth

Portland, OR-- On another cold and wet delayed start before a small crowd of 1,518 at PGE Park, the Portland Beavers squeezed out another much needed win.

Lanky Beavers right-hander Jared Wells exhibited moments of promise, despite five walks through 3.2 innings. Wells fanned five River Cats batters and exhibited some sharp pitching but lacked solid command and consistent execution. Even though Wells was kept on the ropes through the early innings, the auspicious pitcher continued to make some good pitches and displayed an array of sensible off-speed pitches.

In the end, it was Adam Shabala's throw to catcher Luke Carlin with two outs in the ninth with a one run lead that saved the day.

Beaver favorite Jack Cust lazored a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence for a three-run homer (4) and an early Portland lead. An RBI double in the second by Luis Cruz and Vince Sinisi's solo homerun (2) to left center in the third put the Beavers up 5-1 before a three run Sacramento fourth.

Fireballer Andrew Brown picked up the victory, striking out three and walking two while allowing no runs through 2.1 innings. Royce Ring acquired his first hold, pitching two sound innings for the Beavers while closer Leo Rosales marshaled his third save in as many tries, despite a somewhat rocky ninth.

Pitching coach Gary Lance said of Rosales "I would go as far as to say Leo's changeup is as good as Trevor's (Hoffman)."

The game ended when, with two on and two out and the Beavers clinging to a one run lead, River Cats' Charles Thomas' single was nullified by a dead on throw from center fielder Adam Shabala to Luke Carlin. Carlin held on as he was bowled over by Jeremy Brown to preserve the Beaver victory.
