San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has signed right-handed pitcher Chris Young to a four-year contract through the 2010 season with a club option for 2011.

“Chris has emerged as one of the elite pitchers in the game and I believe he will be a cornerstone in our rotation for many years to come,” said Towers. “His professional demeanor on and off the field exemplifies what it means to be a Padre. ”

The 27-year-old Chris Young is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA (3 ER/12.2 IP) in two starts for the Padres this season. Acquired by San Diego from the Texas Rangers on January 4, 2006, he finished with an 11-5 record and a 3.46 ERA (69 ER/179.1 IP) in 31 starts for the Padres last season, recording 164 strikeouts compared to 69 walks. His 2.41 ERA (25 ER/93.1 IP) on the road ranked first among all Major League pitchers. Dating back to June 25, 2005, Young is 9-0 with 16 no-decisions in 25 starts on the road. Only one other pitcher in Major League history went undefeated in 25 straight road starts with Allie Reynolds also accomplishing the feat during the 1948 and 1949 seasons.

Young also held opponents to a National League-best .206 batting average in 2006. He was named National League Pitcher of the Month in June after pitching to a 3-0 record with a 1.17 ERA (4 ER/30.2 IP) in five starts. The 6-10, 260-pound right-hander took a no-hitter at least 5.0 innings on three separate occasions, including 8.1 hitless frames against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 22. In his first career postseason appearance in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Young earned the win after tossing 6.2 shutout innings with nine strikeouts.

An alumni of Princeton University where he earned first-team All-Ivy League honors in both baseball and basketball, Young was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third round of the 2000 First-Year Player draft. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Rangers (2004-05) and Padres (2006-07), he has a career record of 27-14 with a 3.87 ERA (169 ER/393.0 IP), 337 strikeouts and 129 walks in 71 starts.
