Padres release eight more minor leaguers

The San Diego Padres released several more players on Friday, including right-hander Nathan Staggs, left-handers Matt Farrington, John Thomas and Bryan Rueger, shortstop Jorge Rodriguez and outfielders Garner Wetzel, Howie Clark and Chris Prieto.

Nathan Staggs was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the Indepent League and went 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA over 28 appearances for the Fort Wayne Wizards. In 62.2 innings he allowed 57 hits, walked 22 and struck out 59.

Matt Farrington split the season between the Arizona Rookie League and the Northwest League, going 2-2 with a 4.82 ERA over 23 appearances. In 28 innings he allowed 31 hits, walked 12 and struck out 24.

John Thomas, originally a second-round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 1999 went 1-0 with a 2.73 ERA in 15 appearances for the Lake Elsinore Storm. He has a career 19-33 record over six minor league seasons.

Bryan Rueger was signed the week before after he was released from the Yankees organization. He was 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA over two minor league seasons.

Jorge Rodriguez played in 22 games for the Arizona Rookie League Padres in 2006, hitting .242 with 15 walks and 20 strikeouts.

Garner Wetzel, an 18th-round pick of the Padres last year, hit .208 over 27 games for the Eugene Emeralds last season before being demoted to the AZL squad. He went 2-for-15 with the AZL Padres over seven games.

Howie Clark is a career .289 hitter in 1349 games over a minor league career that began in 1992. He also played in 99 major league games, batting .273. He was signed this off-season.

Chris Prieto is a .282 career minor league hitter over 1,339 games - a career that began in 1993. He was also signed this off-season.
