Padres ship five to minors

Peoria, AZ: The San Diego Padres today optioned left-handed pitcher Sean Thompson to Triple-A Portland. The club also reassigned left-handed pitcher Erick Burke, right-handed pitcher Jack Cassel and catchers Justin Hatcher and Nick Hundley to minor league camp.

Sean Thompson went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, allowing one run on five hits over two innings.

Erick Burke pitched in two games, giving up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and three walks in 1.2 innings.

Jack Cassel went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in three games. Over three innings he allowed eight hits and three runs, walking one and striking out two.

Justin Hatcher played in two games, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Nick Hundley saw action in five games but managed to collected three at bats, going 0-for-3 with a run scored.

The Padres now have 53 players in Big League camp, including 39 players from the 40-man roster and 14 non-roster invitees.
