Third time is the charm for David Wells

The San Diego Padres and David Wells have agreed in principle on a one-year deal worth $3 million with incentives that could make it worth as much as $7 million.

David Wells went 1-2 for the Padres last season after being acquired in a trade for catching prospect George Kottaras. He won the playoff-clinching game in Arizona but took the loss in his lone postseason appearance, a 2-0 blanking to the St. Louis Cardinals.

A native of San Diego and a 1982 graduate of Point Loma High School, Wells also pitched for the Padres during the 2004 season.

He made 31 starts for San Diego, finishing 12-8 with a 3.73 ERA (81 ER/195.2 IP). Wells fanned 101 batters compared to 20 walks in his lone full-season in the National League. He led the National League that season with an average of just 0.92 walks allowed per 9.0 innings, not issuing a free pass in 18 of his 31 starts and walking two or fewer batters in 30 of 31 starts.

Wells completes a five-man rotation that also boasts Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Greg Maddux, and Clay Hensley.
