The San Diego Padres signed catcher Robby Jacobson of the Independent League Macon Music of the South Coast League to a contract.

“This is a big day for the South Coast League,” said VP / Director of Baseball Operations Kash Beauchamp. “Robby’s signing is the first step toward establishing a relationship with Major League Baseball and a positive for our entire organization.”

Robby Jacobson, 22, was signed by Padres Vice President, Scouting and Player Development Grady Fuson and will report to minor league spring training in mid February.

Son of former minor leaguer Kevin Jacobson, Robby was drafted out of Durango High School in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 35th round by the Oakland Athletics in 2002, but instead opted for college.

Robby landed with NAIA Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. While playing for the Sea Lions, he met his assistant coach and current Macon Music manager Phil Plantier and quickly formed a bond.

“Working with Phil took me to a new level not only physically, but mentally,” said Jacobson. “He helped me improve as a player as well as a person, and I wouldn’t have had this opportunity without his help.”

On June 3rd, 2006 Robby was invited to a pre-draft workout with the Padres at Petco Park.

In late October, he was contacted by Plantier with an opportunity to play for the Macon Music in the South Coast League.

“Robby is a huge asset as a switch hitting catcher with gap power from both sides of the plate,” shared Plantier. “Over this past year, I have seen him work extremely hard to develop a hitting approach that can withstand the everyday grind of professional baseball and be productive during pressure at-bats.”

Within a few weeks of signing with Macon, Jacobson was contacted by officials with the San Diego Padres who formally offered him a minor league contract and an invite to spring training.

“I couldn’t be happier for Robby,” said Plantier. “He has earned this opportunity and there is nothing more satisfying for a coach than to see a player reach their goals and get a chance to chase their dream of playing Major League Baseball. Robby represents what we are trying to accomplish as we continue to sign and develop young players we feel can move up the ladder of professional baseball.”

The South Coast League is a six-team based independent professional baseball league located in the Southeastern U.S. whose philosophy is centered on player development and growth. The SCL’s goal is to be a resource for Major League Baseball and a stepping stone for players eager to get back into the affiliated ranks.
