Padres add Cameron, lose Soria in Rule 5

The San Diego Padres selected right-handed reliever Kevin Cameron in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday. At the same time, they lost right-hander Joakim Soria to the Kansas City Royals.

Originally selected by the Minnesota Twins in 13th round of 2001 draft, Kevin Cameron went 6-4 with a 2.98 ERA and nine saves last year for Triple-A Rochester of the International League. In 40 games, spanning 66.1 innings, he surrendered 53 hits, walking 26 and striking out 65.

He has a career mark of 17-18 with a 2.92 ERA and features a 88-91 MPH fastball that has life.

The Padres selected him with the 13th overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft and he is expected to comptete for a bullpen job.

Soria, a reliever who saw seven games with the Low-A Fort Wayne Wizards, was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001. He went 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA for Fort Wayne and was in consideration for placement on the Padres 40-man roster and was one of two pitchers featured as candidates to lose in the Rule 5 Draft.

"Soria is a young, talented pitcher with a real feel for pitching who we've been following this winter," Royals Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager Dayton Moore said. "He can compete for various roles on our Major League pitching staff in 2007."

Soria was 9-2 over a 93 game career with a 3.44 ERA. He has a four-pitch arsenal that had the Padres quietly excited with a fastball that reaches 94. He was taken with the second pick overall in the Rule 5 Draft. Recommended Stories
