Sweeney up, Stauffer down

The San Diego Padres today recalled right-handed pitcher Brian Sweeney from Triple-A Portland and optioned right-handed pitcher Tim Stauffer to that same Portland club.

Brian Sweeney, 32, was 2-0 with one save and a 3.33 ERA (17 ER/46.0 IP) in 31 relief appearances for San Diego in 2006 before he was optioned to Portland on July 21. In seven games (five starts) for the Beavers, he has a 2-1 record with a 4.70 ERA (16 ER/30.2 IP). Sweeney has compiled 22 strikeouts compared to seven walks over 30.2 innings for Portland.

Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2003) and Padres (2004, 2006), Sweeney is 3-0 with one save and a 3.62 ERA (28 ER/69.2 IP) in 43 career games (two starts).

Tim Stauffer was recalled from Triple-A Portland on Monday (August 21) and made his first start of the season for the Padres against the Los Angeles Dodgers that night. He improved to 1-0 with the win and holds a 1.50 ERA after allowing only one earned run (two runs overall) over 6.0 innings. Stauffer has appeared in 25 games (24 starts) for Triple-A Portland this season, going 6-12 with a 5.07 ERA (80 ER/142.0 IP).

Originally selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Stauffer appeared in 15 games (14 starts) for the Padres in 2005, going 3-6 with a 5.33 ERA (48 ER/81.0 IP). Over three minor league seasons with the Padres, the 24-year-old Stauffer is 20-22 with a 4.13 ERA (177 ER/385.1 IP).
