David Freese, selected in the ninth round of this year’s June Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres, is the second 2006 pick to join Fort Wayne, following right-hander Jon Kirby. Kirby was reassigned in the Padres organization last week.
For Jodam Rivera, this will be his second stint with the Wizards, after spending the middle portion of June with the team.
Freese was selected out of the University of South Alabama after a successful season. Freese led the Jaguars with a .414 batting average, 73 runs batted in, 12 home runs and 99 hits. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, a first-team American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA All-American and a second-team Collegiate Baseball All-American.
Freese joins the Wizards from the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League where he was hitting .379 with eight doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI in 18 games.
Rivera was with the Arizona-League Padres, hitting .409 with one double and seven runs batted in over 11 games. In three games with the Wizards earlier this season, he hit .100 (1-for-10).
Infielders Abraham Aguilar and Jesus Lopez have both been reassigned within the Padres minor league system to Eugene.
Aguilar hit .195 with four doubles and seven runs batted in, in 43 games with Fort Wayne. Lopez was hitting .212 with five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI in 47 games.
