Williams crisp in rehab assignment
Woody Williams

Posted Jun 22, 2006

Working with all of his pitches, Woody Williams flew through three innings of work against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, his first outing since tearing his left calf muscle. The righty now looks to head to Portland before returning to the big league club.

Woody Williams was effective, if not completely sharp, in his first outing back on the hill in over a month. The righty allowed just two baserunners on a walk and hit batsmen, but worked behind in the count much of the night.

Williams fell behind 2-0 to five of the 11 batters he faced, struggling to work his curveball over the plate to righthanders.

"It feels good, no complaints," said Williams of his calf. "I didn't have to run and cover first base, but as far as pitching everything's fine."

Contrary to earlier reports, Williams was working on a 50-pitch count, leaving the game after throwing 42. He finished his work in the bullpen before calling it a night. "It's funny, because this year [my arm] felt as strong as I ever have," said Williams. "I'm counting on being someone they can count on down the stretch to give a lot of quality innings and give our team a chance to win." Williams stuck with the game plan from his starts at the big league level, throwing one knuckle ball in the game. With two strikes on Quakes catcher Tim Duff, he floated one in at 71 MPH to get a swinging third strike.

Williams will undergo treatment Thursday and then, if all goes well, join Portland for a start on Monday. He expects to stretch out to 75 pitches in that outing and then come off the disabled list to make a start the following weekend at home against San Francisco.
