Howe, 29, joins the Emeralds after spending parts of eight years as an infielder in the Oakland Athletics
organization (1998-2004) and the independent Northern League (2004-05). A 29th round selection of the Oakland Athletics in the 1998 First Year Player Draft, Howe began his professional career with the Southern Oregon Timberjacks of the Northwest League. That season, Howe hit .278 with five home runs and 47 RBI in 68 games. He returned to the NWL in 1999 posting a .301 batting average with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 64 games with Southern Oregon. For his career, Howe batted .261 (661-for-2,533) with 90 home runs and 389 RBI in 700 minor league games.
The son of former Major League player and manager Art Howe, Matt attended Texas Christian University where he was a three year letterman for the Horned Frogs from 1996-98. Howe and his wife Maggie, have one daughter, Averi (1), and reside in Houston, Texas.

EUGENE – The San Diego Padres on Thursday announced the hiring of Matt Howe as the hitting coach for the Emeralds this season. Howe replaces Joe Ferguson who was forced to leave the post for personal reasons.
