Junge six-hitter stifles the Grizzlies

PORTLAND-- Looks are deceiving. Just ask veteran right-hander Eric Junge. His ERA, which stood at 8.49 before last night's game vs. the Fresno Grizzlies, is deceiving. He has actually pitched well, of late.

In his last 12 innings, over the last two games, he has only given up 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, struck out eight and surrendered four walks. Junge's only bad outing of the season was against Salt Lake City Bee, on April 12 where he was rocked for nine runs, 10 hits and gave up seven earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Tonight against the Grizzlies, Eric Junge picked up where he left off after his last outing against Colorado Springs in which he gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits, three walks and three strikeouts. He extended his outing by tossing 7.0 innings of five hit ball, walking only one and striking out five.

"The main reason Eric was successful tonight he had command of his fastball and he was down in the strike zone," said pitching coach Gary Lance.

He had some help, the opposing starting pitcher, Pedro Liriano, only lasted 1.0 inning giving up three runs, on two hits, walked three and committed a throwing error.

Freddy Guzman raised his batting average 15 points to .275 by going two for three (two singles) with two walks. He was caught stealing in the sixth for the second time in nine attempts.

Jon Adkins continued his lights out relief pitching by tossing a scoreless ninth inning recording this third save since coming back to the Beavers from the Padres. In six outings with the Beavers he has allowed just three hits in 21 at bats and sports an eye-popping era of 0.00. He has already exceeded his career total for saves with three. Before this season he had just two career saves in 209 appearances over his first seven professional seasons.
