Five members of the club's 40 man roster were optioned out today. First baseman/outfielder Paul McAnulty and outfielder Freddy Guzman were sent to Triple-A Portland, where each will start regularly.
Right-handed pitcher Jared Wells, left-handed pitcher Sean Thompson and catcher George Kottaras, all of whom are on the MadFriars.com top 10 prospects list, were optioned to Double-A Mobile as expected.
McAnulty, who had two stints with the major league club in 2005, had a single and double in 10 at-bats in the big-league camp. Guzman, recovering from a full-year layoff after Tommy John surgery last spring, was 3-for-10 with a double and triple with the big club.
The club also reassigned their top draft picks from each of the last two years, along with three others. Cesar Carrillo and Matt Bush were each in their first major league camp for the experience rather than any expectation of joining the Padres in April.
Righties Kenny Baugh and Mike Thompson and left-hander Erick Burke also were sent to the minor-league camp. Baugh was acquired in an offseason trade, but was removed from the 40-man roster at the start of camp. All are likely to start the season in Portland, but those decisions won't be finalized until next month.
