Padres trade Steik for Baugh

The San Diego Padres today acquired right-handed pitcher Kenny Baugh from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Ricky Steik.

Kenny Baugh, 26, went 12-8 with a 3.38 ERA (62 ER/165.1 IP) and 107 strikeouts in 28 starts for Detroit's Triple-A Toledo affiliate in 2005. Baugh's performance helped the Mud Hens fashion a team 3.70 ERA, an International League best, while individually he ranked fifth among league leaders.

Originally the 11th overall pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, Baugh has a career record of 33-29 with a 3.61 ERA (202 ER/503.0 IP) in 86 starts over parts of five minor league seasons.

Ricky Steik, 21, went 0-6 with three saves and a 2.40 ERA (17 ER/60.0 IP) in 54 relief appearances for Single-A Fort Wayne in 2005. In 60.0 innings, he walked 24 and struck out 53, while holding opponents to a .247 average.

Selected in the seventh round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Steik has gone 2-10 with 10 saves and a 3.29 ERA (35 ER/95.2 IP) in 86 career minor league appearances.
