Padres look to be active in Rule Five Draft
Dale Thayer

After a busy Wednesday, Padres executives have one more order of business to finish before leaving Dallas Thursday. The annual Rule Five draft will begin at 9:00 a.m. CST, and the Padres figure to be active there as well.

As part of the Dewon Brazelton trade on Wednesday, the Padres also have acquired the Devil Rays’ selection – the third overall – in the draft of prospects not on their teams’ 40-man rosters. The Padres are rumored to be interested in several pitchers and perhaps a position player as well. By leapfrogging 15 teams, their chances of getting the player they want improve dramatically.

Some of the pitchers left exposed in the draft include lefties Ricky Barrett (Minnesota), Matt Coenen (Atlanta) and Orlando Rodriguez (Dodgers) and right-handers Shawn Kohn (Oakland), Billy Sadler (San Francisco) and Matt Roney (Texas).

Position players who may attract interest include Cleveland outfielders Ben Francisco and Jason Cooper, Arizona’s Brian Barden and Dan Uggla, and Cubs’ slugger Brandon Sing.

With nine spots open on their 40-man roster, it is possible the Padres would take two players in the draft. Any player claimed in the Rule Five draft must remain on the active roster all year or be offered back to their original team.

One interesting name who the Padres have left unprotected is Dale Thayer and he may be a consideration for a team looking at relievers. He pitched in Double-A Mobile last year and led the Southern League in saves with 27.
