Padres sign Young, acquire Hill

The San Diego Padres today agreed to terms with infielder/outfielder Eric Young on a one-year contract and acquired infielder Bobby Hill from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations

Eric Young, 38, batted .275 with two home runs, nine doubles, seven stolen bases and 22 runs scored in 56 games with the Padres. Young appeared in 14 games at second base, including 10 starts, while making 25 appearances in the outfield, including 22 starts.

Over parts of 14 Major League seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992, 1997-99), Colorado Rockies (1993-97), Chicago Cubs (2000-01), Milwaukee Brewers (2002-03), San Francisco Giants (2003), Texas Rangers (2004) and San Diego (2005), Young has a career batting average of .285 (1703-for-5981) with 76 home runs, 321 doubles, 45 triples, 528 RBIs, 976 runs scored and 457 stolen bases. His stolen base total ranks 46th all-time and third among active Major League leaders.

Bobby Hill, 27, batted .269 (25-for-93) with six doubles, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored in 58 games for the Pirates in 2005. Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Hill has a career batting average of .262 (137-for-523) with six home runs 20 doubles, 58 RBIs and 67 runs scored in 249 games over parts of four Major League seasons with the Cubs (2002-03) and Pirates (2003-05).

With the additions of Young and Hill, the Padres' 40-man roster now stands at 31.
