Mobile announces end of year awards

The Mobile BayBears handed out their team awards on Tuesday with five players earning honors and one executive.

The winners are usually announced at the final home game of the season, but they were canceleddue to Hurricane Katrina.

Outfielder-first baseman Paul McAnulty was named player of the year for 2005. Center fielder Kennard Jones was named the Most Valuable Player, with Dale Thayer taking Pitcher of the Year honors, Ronnie Merrill earning most popular player and Sean Thompson claiming the community service award.

McAnulty, now in his second stint of the season with the parent San Diego Padres, hit .282 for the BayBears with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs in 79 games.

Jones, who was promoted to Triple-A Portland in late August, hit .281 with one homer, 60 RBIs and 23 stolen bases in 124 games.

Thayer had 27 saves to lead the Southern League. Merrill, a Southern League All-Star, played several positions on the infield and was promoted to Triple-A.

Betty Adams, the team's assistant general manager for finance and merchandise, was the Southern League's Woman of Excellence award winner for 2005. Adams is also in the running for Woman Executive of the Year, chosen at the Winter Meetings in December.
