Several players were moved around on Thursday as the juggling continues in the San Diego Padres system. Matt Thayer was sent down to Fort Wayne from Lake Elsinore. Brian Cavanaugh was shipped back to Eugene from Fort Wayne. Ricky Steik lands on the disabled list and as a result Neil Jamison is promoted.

Outfielder Matt Thayer was sent back to Fort Wayne from the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League. Thayer, in 21 games for Fort Wayne earlier this season, was hitting .387 with eight doubles before being promoted to the Storm on August 1. In 22 games with Lake Elsinore this year, Thayer was hitting .293 with one double, a triple and one home run, along with six runs batted in.

Right-handed reliever Ricky Steik was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to August 14. Steik is 0-5 with three saves and a 2.30 earned run average in 52 relief appearances for the Wizards. In 58 2/3 innings, he had allowed 52 hits, issued 22 walks and struck out 51. Steik was used primarily as a set-up reliever before right-handed closer Matt Varner entered the game.

Brian Cavanaugh, who was sent to the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, was the 21st round selection by San Diego in this year’s draft from East Carolina University. In seven games with the Wizards, the left-handed hitting Cavanaugh was hitting .150 with one double and a pair of runs batted in. Over his last five games, he was hitting .286 with a run and both his RBI.

Neil Jamison was the sixth round pick (188 overall) by the Padres in this season’s June Amateur Draft. He was a teammate of current Wizard starting pitcher Cesar Ramos at Long Beach State University and is a native of San Diego, CA.

Jamison comes to Fort Wayne after opening the season with the Emeralds. He was 1-2 with eight saves and a 1.32 ERA in 25 relief appearances. Over the course of 27 1/3 innings, the right-hander allowed 23 hits, four walks and struck out 31.

Jamison led the Dirtbags with 11 saves and was 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In 29 2/3 innings and 27 appearances, he allowed a total of 21 base runners (16 hits, five walks) and struck out 27.

Daniel Baca was also shipped to the Eugene Emeralds after a tumultuous tour with the Lake Elsinore Storm.
