Corey Smith blasted six home runs, in six games last week on his way to earning the honor. He had two games with two home runs, July 26 and July 28 (one of which was a 10th inning walk off home run), against the Mississippi Braves. In addition to leading the Southern League in home runs this past week, Smith also led the league in slugging percentage(1.174) and extra-base hits (7).
Corey is in his first season with the BayBears and the Padres organization. The Indians selected Smith with the 26th pick in the first round of the 2000 draft out of Piscataway High School in New Jersey and traded him to the Padres on February 2, 2005 in exchange for former BayBear Jake Gautreau.
Smith becomes the third BayBears player this season to earn Hitter or Pitcher of the Week honors. Brian Whitaker (Pitcher of the Week, June 27-July 3) and Greg Sain (Hitter of the Week, May 16-22) are the other two that have achieved the honor this season.
