Paul Quantrill, designated for assignment Thursday along with Mike Stanton by the Yankees, was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 22 appearances this year.
"We're getting an experienced reliever who's pitched in the postseason and will add depth to our bullpen," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said Saturday of his acquisition of the 36-year-old right-hander.
Darrel May, 33, has pitched for six major-league teams and in Japan and was 1-3 with a 6.69 ERA in eight starts for the Padres.
Tim Redding, 27, was 0-5 with an 8.94 ERA. He has a career mark of 21-33 but was a 10-game winner for the Astros in 2003.
It is likely that recently added Pedro Astacio will be brought up from his assignment with the Portland Beavers and it is possible Eric Young or Brian Falkenborg could also make the move, though Young is 0-for-16 with Portland since his return.
