The San Diego Padres today placed first baseman Phil Nevin on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 21) due to a strained left oblique and recalled outfielder Ben Johnson from Triple-A Portland. Johnson had six RBI's in his last game for the Beavers.
Phil Nevin
, 34, is batting .268 (69-for-257) with nine home runs and a team-leading 47 RBI, also the 15th highest total in the National League. Earlier this season he moved into second place on San Diego’s all-time home run list after hitting his 155th as a Padre May 28 at San Francisco. He also tallied the 1,000th hit of his career May 31 vs. Milwaukee.
Over parts of 11 Major League seasons with the
Houston Astros
(1995),
Detroit Tigers
(1995-1997), Anaheim Angels (1998) and Padres (1999-2005), Nevin has a career batting average of .277 (1,015-for-3,668) with 183 home runs, 192 doubles and 667 RBI.
Ben Johnson
, 24, has played in 73 games for the Beavers, batting .299 (82-for-274) with a team-high 17 home runs and is tied for the team lead with 49 RBI. Over parts of six minor league seasons in the St. Louis and San Diego organizations, Johnson has a career batting average of .259 (690-for-2661) with 97 home runs and 398 RBI in 751 games.
Additionally, infielder/outfielder
Eric Young
will begin a 20-day rehabilitation assignment with Portland today. Young was placed on the 60-day disabled list on April 8 due to a separated right shoulder. He has appeared in three games for the Padres this season, batting .333 (1-for-3) with a double and two runs scored.
