On Thursday, the San Diego Padres made a deal to acquire shorstop Wilson Valdez from the Seattle Mariners. Valdez had played in 42 games for Seattle, hitting .198 with five doubles and eight RBI.
He was recently designated for assignment by the club.
To get Valdez, the Padres sent right-handers Mike Bumstead and R.D. Spiehs packing.
Bumstead went 2-2 with a 5.26 ERA in 12 games (four starts) for Triple-A Portland, while Spiehs compiled a 1-1 mark with a 4.70 ERA and one save in 12 relief appearances.
In other news, Angel Tovar was demoted from Triple-A Portland to Double-A Mobile on Thursday. Tovar takes the place of Wilmer Villatoro who was sent back down to Lake Elsinore late Wednesday.
