Fort Wayne Wizards right-hander Michael Ekstrom was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, for the period ending Sunday, May 22. Ekstrom threw a complete-game shutout on Monday, May 16 against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate), and ended the week on Sunday with five shutout innings against the Kane County Cougars (Oakland A’s affiliate).
Against the Whitecaps, Ekstrom allowed four hits and one walk, while striking out five. Against the Cougars, he allowed two hits, one walk and struck out five. Ekstrom picked up his second win of the week against Kane County, returning to pitch one inning after a brief rain delay.
For the season, Ekstrom is 6-0 with a 1.29 earned run average in nine starts. He has allowed a total of 11 runs (eight earned). In his 56 innings of work, Ekstrom has allowed 43 hits, 12 walks and struck out 37.
In winning his last five consecutive starts, Ekstrom has surrendered only four runs, 25 hits and five walks, while striking out 19 in 34 innings. For the month of May, he is 4-0 with a 0.62 ERA.
Ekstrom is the second Wizards player to garner Player of the Week honors, after catcher Colt Morton was named Midwest League Batter of the Week (April 18-April 24).
Cory Doyne was the last Wizards pitcher to earn Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors when he earned the distinction in August of 2003.
