Breslow Flawless; Morton on a Tear
Colt Morton with Fort Wayne 2004

Posted Apr 29, 2005

Double headers are on tap for both Portland and Lake Elsinore after weather prevented both squads from playing Thursday, but in Fort Wayne Colt Morton is hot enough to drive away rain by himself, while down in Mobile Craig Breslow found his opponents stumbling around the bases as if they were waterlogged.

Portland postponed due to unsuitable weather

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 with each contest seven innings.

Mobile won 7-4

The BayBears secured two of three outs in the fifth inning by way of bad baserunning. They nabbed one out when a runner rounded second and fell trying to scramble back to the bag. Mike Richardson picked him off before he could get back safely. Then Craig Breslow picked off a runner. Breslow has now picked off three runners this year in 12.2 innings of work. The left-hander picked up the win and has not allowed a run in six straight appearances, spanning 7.1 innings.

Brian Whitaker lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on ten hits and two walks. Whitaker did not allow double-digit hit totals throughout all of 2004 and the last time he gave up ten or more hits in a game was with Fort Wayne on July 3, 2003.

Jason Clements hit a pinch-hit three run homer in the sixth. He came into the game with two RBI’s in 12 games. Clements was just 2-for-23 coming into the game and has not had a successful pinch hit all year.

Lake Elsinore postponed due to wet conditions

No makeup date was available but it figures to be during the weekend series.

Fort Wayne lost 6-4

Colt Morton went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI’s. Morton, hitting .362, has knocked in 12 runs in the past seven games. He did commit his second error of the season and threw out just one of five runners attempting to steal against him on Thursday. He has caught two of the past 15 baserunners attempting to steal.

Fort Wayne Wizards catcher Colt Morton was named the Midwest League Batter of the Week, for the period ending Sunday, April 24. Morton was 7-for-17 hitting for a .412 batting average with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and six runs batted in.

Entering today‚s game against the Beloit Snappers, Morton is hitting .362, good for ninth in the Midwest League. He also leads the league with 19 runs batted in and a .702 slugging percentage. Morton also ranks among the league leaders with four home runs (tied for second), seven runs scored and 17 hits.

He is the first Wizards player to be named a Midwest League Player of the Week since pitcher Cory Doyne earned the honor in August of 2003. Morton is the first offensive player for the Wizards to earn the Batter of the Week award since Kennard Jones accomplished the feat in May of 2003.

After starting the year in a 3-for-35 slump, Yordany Ramirez has gone 9-for-20 to up his average from .086 to .218, including a five game hitting streak. He has also stolen three bases in the past four games.

In an ammendment to Girardeau's stats:

After not making it through the sixth inning in any of his first three starts of the year, Clark Girardeau went again was halted after five on Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks. Girardeau had allowed just five runs in 15 innings to open the year.
