Colt Morton with Fort Wayne 2004

MadFriars.com has the 411, and for you, just this once, and I swear I never do this for anybody...it's free. Today we find Chris Oxspring bouncing back, Rusty Tucker's continued struggles costing Mobile, and Sean Thompson finding something new to complain about in Thompson Tuesdays.

Portland won 5-4

Robert Fick went 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBI’s and a walk on Thursday. Fick has hits in each of the four games he has played and has knocked in runs in three straight. Fick, playing first base, did have an error in the field.

Chris Oxspring bounced back after allowing nine runs in his first 11 innings of work. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk to get his first win of the year. Oxspring was also 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Brian Falkenborg made his seventh appearance of the season and still hasn’t allowed a run. Falkenborg has allowed six hits in 10.2 innings and has stranded three of four inherited runners, allowing his first inherited runner to score on Thursday.

Mobile lost 6-5

With Paul McAnulty out for about five-to-seven days and Greg Sain out for a few days due to injuries suffered on Wednesday, Nick Trzesniak is logging time at first base. Trzesniak delivered like a power hitting first baseman on Thursday, hitting a solo homer and batting third. He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Mike Bumstead cruised through six innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four. He opened the seventh with two walks and was lifted. The floodgates opened soon thereafter. Jack Cassel followed by allowing three hits and a walk, two runs charged to Bumstead. Cassel was charged with three runs, his first runs allowed since April 8.

Rusty Tucker took the loss, pitching an inning and a third, yielding three walks and one hit. He left with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth but Dale Thayer could not keep one runner from scoring for the win. Tucker has allowed four runs in his last five appearances.

Lake Elsinore won 12-2

Sean Thompson won his third straight decision, but don’t expect him to be happy about it in his journal. He allowed two solo homers, accounting for the only two runs he allowed in five innings of work. He also walked three, gave up six hits and struck out seven. Thompson owns a 1.62 ERA and picked off the fourth baserunner of the year on Thursday.

Michael Johnson isn’t just hot, he is on fire. He went 2-for-4 with a double, homer, sac fly and four RBI’s. Through 12 games played, Johnson has 23 RBI’s. He has knocked in a run in all but two of those games and has five multi-RBI games. The sacrifice fly was his third of the year.

Fernando Valenzuela went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Valenzuela has eight multi-hit games this year in 14 contests and is hitting .390. His 12 runs scored are second best on the team.

Fort Wayne won 8-3

Matt Bush hit his first home run as a professional on Thursday, a solo shot in the third. The shortstop had gone 41 games without hitting a dinger. Bush had just his second multi-hit game of the year in 13 games. He did have a seven game hitting streak earlier in the year.

Colt Morton hit his fourth homer of the year, a two run blast in the seventh. Morton has hit two homers in as many games. Of the five games Morton has driven in a run this year, he has plated two or more in four.

Chris Kolkhorst has reached base safely in 14 straight games to open the season. He has reached base two or more times in ten of those games. Kolkhorst also added two stolen bases and two runs scored, the first time this year that he has scored two runs in a game.
