The San Diego Padres signed free agent outfielder Eric Young to a one year contract. Reliever Mike Bynum was also designated for assignment.

Eric Young, a speedster who had a .380 on base percentage last year, was signed by the Friars on Thursday. Young batted .288 (99-for-344) with 25 doubles, one home run, 27 RBI, 55 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 104 games with the Texas Rangers in 2004.

Young agreed on a one-year contract worth $1 million. The deal also includes an $850,000 club option for 2006 plus up to $700,000 in annual performance incentives.

Young has batted .285 (1664-for-5839) with 312 doubles, 74 home runs, 516 RBI and 954 runs scored in 1,614 career games. He has had three seasons with 50 or more stolen bases and adds an element of speed to a slow Padres team.

Young can play both infield and outfield positions, giving the Padres a player that can contribute in many ways. He has played centerfield, left-field and three infield positions in 2004.

Mike Bynum, 27, has gone 2-5 with a 7.73 ERA (55 ER/64.0 IP) in 29 games (eight starts) over parts of three seasons with the Padres. He spent most of 2004 with Triple-A Portland, going 6-6 with a 3.19 ERA (28 ER/79.0 IP) in 62 games out of the bullpen. He made two relief appearances with the Padres last September, suffering one loss while allowing four runs in 0.2 innings.

Congratulations to now former Mobile BayBears broadcaster Tom Nichols who will move on after eight years with the Padres' Double-A affiliate to be the broadcaster and Director of Media Relations for The Gary SouthShore RailCats.
