The San Diego Padres have traded outfielder Terrence Long and right-hander Dennis Tankersley to Kansas City for left-hander Darrell May and right-hander Ryan Bukvich.

Darrell May gives the Padres a starter who has averaged closed to 200 innings the last two seasons. He was 9-and-19 with a five-point-61 E-R-A this past year. Ryan Bukvich provides a power arm out of the bullpen.

"The addition of May and Bukvich gives us two more solid arms as we prepare for the 2005 season," said General Manager Kevin Towers. "In May we get a durable left-handed pitcher who has recorded close to 200 innings his last two seasons, while Bukvich gives us another power arm with a solid fastball out of the bullpen."

May, 32, went 9-19 with a 5.61 ERA (116 ER/186.0 IP) in 31 starts with the Kansas City Royals in 2004. He threw three complete games last season, including a five-hit shutout of the Baltimore Orioles on June 9 at Oriole Park. May, who led the Royals in wins and innings pitched for the second consecutive season, tossed at least 7.0 innings in 11 of his 31 starts. In 2003, May was named the Royals Pitcher of the Year after posting a 10-8 record with a 3.77 ERA (88 ER/210.0 IP). He set a career high in innings pitched that season, also the most by a Royals left-handed pitcher since 1996.

Bukvich, 26, appeared in nine game for the Royals last season, going 0-0 with a 3.68 ERA (3 ER/7.1 IP), one save and holding right-handed batters to a .167 batting average (2-for-12). He began the season with Triple-A Omaha, going 3-4 with seven saves and a 4.37 ERA in 38 relief appearances. The 6-2, 250-pound Bukvich, who earned his first career save on July 15 vs. Minnesota and did not allow a hit or a run in his first six outings (5.1 IP), has a career 2-0 record with a 6.54 ERA (31 ER/42.2 IP) in 44 games over parts of three Major League seasons with the Royals (2002-04). Originally drafted in the 11th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Bukvich has appeared 174 minor league games, going 8-9 with a 2.79 ERA (72 ER/232.0 IP) with 47 saves.

Long batted .295 with three home runs and 28 R-B-Is. Tankersley went 0-and-5 with a five-point-14 E-R-A in nine games, including six starts, last season.
