The San Diego Padres recalled outfielder Xavier Nady and right-hander Justin Germano from Triple-A Portland on Monday and sent speedy outfielder Freddy Guzman and right-hander Dennis Tankersley down to Portland.

Xavier Nady, called up for the third time this year, started in center field against the St. Louis Cardinals and went 0-for-3. He was hitting .330 with 22 homers and 70 RBIs for Portland. Nady had been on a tear with Portland, hitting homers in five of his last six games.

Justin Germano is up with the Padres for the second time this season. He was 1-1 with a 6.59 ERA during his first stint, from May 18-June 7. He was 9-5 with a 3.38 ERA in Portland. Germano pitched three innings on Sunday and has not allowed more than three runs in his past 12 starts for Portland.

The Padres sent right-hander Dennis Tankersley and outfielder Freddy Guzman to Portland. Tankersley was 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA in two stints with the Padres. Guzman, who made his big league debut on Aug. 17, hit just .185.
