The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Marty McLeary from Triple-A Portland on Sunday and sent down utility player Brian Buchanan.

Marty McLeary, obtained from the Florida Marlins in April, was 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA and 13 saves for Portland in 40 games, including seven starts.

All of McLeary's saves have come since July 3rd. Since returning to the bullpen, McLeary has allowed runs in two of his past 16 appearances. He has blown one save and in his last two outings has gotten out of a bases loaded jam and has not allowed a hit.

The right-hander was originally selected by Red Sox in 10th round of 1997 draft.

Brian Buchanan, assigned to Portland, batted .200 with two homers and six RBIs in 38 games with San Diego.

Buchanan hit .357 in 12 games with Portland. He had two homers, eight doubles and 12 RBI's for the Beavers.

Over parts of five Major League seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2000-02) and Padres (2002-04), Buchanan has a career average of .259 (198-for-764) with 32 home runs and 103 RBI in 344 games.
