The San Diego Padres today recalled outfielder Freddy Guzman from Triple-A Portland and requested unconditional release waivers on right-handed reliever Rod Beck.

Freddy Guzman, ranked by Baseball America as the Padres' No. 3 prospect entering 2004, appeared in 66 games with the Beavers, batting .292 (77-for-264) with 12 doubles, 48 runs and a Pacific Coast League-leading 48 stolen bases. Prior to being promoted to Portland on May 28, the 23-year-old Guzman appeared in 35 games with Double-A Mobile, batting .283 (39-for-138) with 21 runs scored and 17 stolen bases in 22 attempts.

During the 2003 campaign, Guzman appeared in a total of 118 games at Single-A Lake Elsinore, Double-A Mobile and Portland, leading all of baseball with 90 stolen bases in 107 attempts. Originally signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent on April 17, 2000, Guzman has a career batting average of .271 (351-for-1296) with 254 runs scored and 234 stolen bases in 334 games.

Rod Beck appeared in 26 games for the Padres in 2004, going 0-2 with a 6.38 ERA (17 ER/24.0 IP). The 36-year-old reliever re-signed with the Padres as a free agent on December 6, 2003 after appearing in 36 games for the Friars last season, going 3-2 with a 1.78 ERA (7 ER/35.1 IP) and 20 saves. Beck, who was named the club's 2003 Pitcher of the Year by the San Diego chapter of the Baseball Writer's Association of America, went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA (4 ER/14.2 IP) prior to the All-Star break and completed the second half of the season with a 2-1 mark, 1.31 ERA (3 ER/20.2 IP) and 12 saves while holding opponents to a .178 average.

Originally drafted by Oakland in the 13th round of the 1986 First-Year Player Draft, Beck has a career record of 38-45 with 286 saves and a 3.31 ERA (282 ER/768.0 ERA) in 704 games over parts of 13 Major League seasons with the San Francisco Giants (1991-97), Chicago Cubs (1998-99), Boston Red Sox (1999-2001) and Padres (2003-04).
