Ismael Valdez pitched the first complete game shutout of the season for the San Diego Padres as they…
Padres seeing triple, win 5-2
The Padres extended their lead in the fifth on a solo homer from Phil Nevin and in the sixth, Ismael Valdez helped his own cause with a ground rule double to put the Padres up 5-1.
"I missed some pitches a couple times, and they took advantage of it," Milwaukee starter Victor Santos said. "If I make my pitch, they're most likely to be out."
"I really don't know how I hit that ball. I'm glad that I could help the team in any way" Valdez said.
Valdez moved to 4-2 and said he felt more comfortable on the mound after Padres coaches found an inconsistency in his motion that was causing him to fall to the first base side in his delivery.
The Brewers got one back in the seventh when Counsel doubled in Scott Podsednik. Scott Linebrink, Akinori Otsuka and Trevor Hoffman closed out the game with Hoffman earning his 14th save.
The Padres sport a 10-0 record when all three pitch in the same contest.
Milwaukee struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Craig Counsel hit a one out single and was pushed to third on a double by Ben Grieve. Geoff Jenkins then drove in Counsel with a ground out before Ismael Valdez could end the inning without further damage.
A Terrence Long triple in the second inning scored Phil Nevin who singled to open the inning. The Padres, however, could not push another run across despite having a man on third and no out.
Jon Knott made his major league debut in the ninth inning and popped out pinch hitting for Akinori Otsuka.
"They told me to be ready to play and I guess (I need to) take advantage of whatever opportunities come up to make sure I am prepared for them," Knott said.
Jeff Cirillo started at second base for Mark Loretta. Loretta has started 49 straight to open the year. Cirillo had not played second base since 1996.
There was talk that Valdez would be bumped if he had a subpar performance, now it looks like the youngsters will be first in line to get pushed back, even to the Minors.
