Baker to disabled list, Smyres assigned to Wizards

The San Diego Padres and Fort Wayne Wizards announced on Saturday that Infielder/Outfielder Casey Baker has been placed on the disabled list effective immediately. Justin Smyres will take his place on the roster.

Casey Baker hurt his hand in the third inning of Friday's ballgame and was immediately taken out and replaced by Greg Bochy. Baker had a three game hitting streak going for him when he hit the disabled list. He was 4-12 during the current stretch. It is unclear when Baker will be ready to return.

Infielder Justin Smyres has been assigned to the Wizards from the Padres extended spring training camp in Peoria, AZ. Smyres was an 11th round draft pick by the Padres in the 2003 draft. He played in Eugene last season and batted .280 with 0 home runs and 14 RBI's. Smyres is 23 years old and played his college baseball for Cal-State Fullerton.

Smyres was in Lake Elsinore earlier this year and hit .265 for the club, leaving them after a 2-for-3 outing. Brian Burgamy returned to the Storm which sent Smyres back to extended spring training.
