David Wells is in his comfort zone when he faces the Atlanta Braves. The lefthander has now faced…
First time's a charm
With no outs and a runner on second, Wells went to field a bunt and could not come up with the out. After a line out, Valentino Pascucci hit a sac fly to score Tony Bautista. Pascucci would have been the third out of the inning.
The Padres tied it in the sixth on Brian Giles' triple that scored Mark Loretta, who singled with two outs before Giles hit his triple, that rookie outfielder Pascucci misplayed. Giles went 3-for-3 on the day and has upped his average to .238. At one point, Giles' average sat at .111.
With the game tied 1-all, Ryan Klesko singled to open the seventh. Running on a 3-2 pitch, Klesko advanced to second on a grounder to short by Miguel Ojeda. He scored on Greene's drive to right-center with two outs.
Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 6th save of the year. It was the third night in a row Hoffman saw action.
For Wells, it was his 201st win of his career. The win pushed him past George Uhle, Chuck Finley, Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown for 96th on the all-time list for most career wins by a pitcher. Mussina and Brown are still active as Wells ranks fourth on the active list (Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Randy Johnson), although the battle between the three will likely bounce around all season.
"It's a great feeling," said Wells of his first win as a Padre. "I had a lot of friends out there in the stands. I went out and did my job. I kept the team in the ballgame and these guys came through at the right time."
"He was outstanding, did a terrific job," Manager Bruce Bochy said. "Like anyone, he wants to win, and it hasn't been easy."
The two teams will meet to conclude their 2004 series with a three-game set at Olympic Stadium from August 27-29.
The Padres team ERA now sits at 3.67 (84 ER/206.0 IP). Including Thursday, starters have had six outings in which they did not give up an earned run and 15 total with two runs or fewer allowed.
