Padres Stop Giant Curse

The San Diego Padres, once dominated by the San Francisco Giants, have seemingly turned a significant corner. With their second consecutive drubbing of the Giants, the Friars have now won 5-of-7 against their nemesis this year and 3-of-4 in San Fran.

"Since this ballpark's been here we've had a very difficult time here," Bruce Bochy said. "It's nice to see us play well here, which we did this series."

Giants Manager Felipe Alou had a different take:

"It's a funk we're in right now. We've got to fight our way out of it. All ways, pitching, hitting and defense."

The Padres got a six run second inning, filled with a total contribution from the lineup to give Ismael Valdez enough support for his second victory of the year.

With the bases loaded, Miguel Ojeda delivered an RBI single to score Jay Payton. Khalil Greene then followed with a two run double. After Valdez grounded out, Sean Burroughs singled in Ojeda, Mark Loretta hit a sac fly to knock in Greene and Brian Buchanon doubled to drive in Burroughs to give the Padres a 6-2 lead.

The Giants had gotten on the board first with a Ray Durham homer and an RBI groundout.

Valdez doubled to open the sixth inning and came around to score on a sac fly. With one on and two outs, Phil Nevin took the first offering from Wayne Franklin and hit his third homer of the season and put the Friars ahead 9-2.

Neifi Perez tripled in two runs in the sixth off Valdez to close the score to 9-4. Valdez went 5-2/3 innings, allowing four runs, two earned.
