All Not So Wells

David Wells

David Wells second start of the year, and first ever against LA, wasn't as smooth as his first go-round. A six run second filled with singles doomed the San Diego Padres as they took the loss, 11-4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Three straight singles opened the second inning before David Wells got a ground out. After an intentional walk to Jose Hernandez to get to Kaz Ishii, Ishii singled in two runs. After a sac fly and an infield single, Milton Bradley doubled the last two runs in before getting thrown out at third as he tried to stretch his hit into a triple.

Two more runs scored in the fifth when Bradley and Sean Green reached base before Jason Szuminski relieved Wells and gave up a single to Paul Lo Duca. Juan Encarnacion added to the misery with a two run homer in the seventh.

The Padres got three runs in the seventh when Khalil Greene tripled in Phil Nevin and Miguel Ojeda. Brian Buchanon then singled him in to make the score 10-4.

Notes:

It was just the second time this year the Padres starting pitching has allowed two runs or more.

To honor the enduring impact of Jackie Robinson and his legacy, Major League Baseball has established April 15 as "Jackie Robinson Day" throughout the Major Leagues.

"I have often stated that baseball's proudest moment and its most powerful social statement came on April 15, 1947 when Jackie Robinson first set foot on a Major League Baseball field," said Commissioner Bud Selig. "On that day, Jackie brought down the color barrier and ushered in the era in which baseball became the true national pastime. Fifty years after that historic event, in April 1997, I was proud to join Rachel Robinson and President Bill Clinton at Shea Stadium to honor Jackie by retiring his uniform number 42 in perpetuity. By establishing April 15 as 'Jackie Robinson Day' throughout Major League Baseball, we are further ensuring that the incredible contributions and sacrifices he made -- for baseball and society -- will not be forgotten."

At every ballpark hosting Jackie Robinson Day (except at Wrigley Field), a special video tribute to Robinson created by Major League Baseball Productions will be played during pre-game ceremonies. In addition, Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars will participate in pre-game ceremonies at many of the 13 ballparks.
