The Portland Beavers today placed first baseman/third baseman Todd Sears on the disabled list and announced that shortstop Jose Nieves has been transferred to Portland from extended spring training.

Todd Sears, who made his 2004 debut in Saturday night’s 7-6 victory at Las Vegas, was placed on the seven-day minor league disabled list with lingering back problems. He was 0-for-3 in Saturday’s game before being taken out in the sixth inning.

To replace Sears on the Beavers' 24-man roster, the team added Jose Nieves, who signed with the San Diego Padres organization during spring training.

Nieves, 28, spent the 2003 season in the St. Louis Cardinals’ and New York Yankees’ organizations, batting a combined .211 (46-for-217) in 67 games between Triple-A Memphis and Columbus. A veteran of 12 professional seasons, Nieves has played 212 major league games with Chicago (NL) and Anaheim. He began his career in 1992 with the Milwaukee Brewers organization after being signed as a non-drafted free agent that year.
