Padres End Spring With Loss
Watkins erased a fine performance from Sterling Hitchcock. Hitchcock tossed five innings of two run ball on four hits and one walk while striking out six. Only one run was earned.
Brian Giles had two doubles and knocked in two. Brian Buchanon also plated two with Ramon Vasquez and Mark Loretta each adding one RBI.
Among the Padre regulars, Loretta, Burroughs, Giles, Greene and Payton (limited action) batted over .300. Loretta led the team in hits, Burroughs in runs and Giles in RBI's, homers and doubles.
Not many were notable among the pitching staff. Luckily for the team, the slate is now clean.
The Padres ended spring with an 11-20 record. They head into the regular season to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Brian Lawrence will oppose Hideo Nomo. Milton Bradley, acquired by the Dodgers on Sunday will be in uniform and playing centerfield.
