The Padres took the early lead off RBI singles by Sean Burroughs and Ryan Klesko in the third. Greene tripled to start the rally and after an out, Burroughs knocked him in with a single. Loretta followed with a single and had to leave the game after slipping while rounding first base. Klesko eventually followed with a double to knock in Burroughs.
Mark Loretta, Khalil Greene and Klesko each had two hits and Burroughs was the only other Padre to get a hit.
The D-Backs got one back in the fourth on a sac fly by Tracy which knocked in Matt Kata.
After a shaky outing the first time out, Adam Eaton pitched four innings allowing one run and two hits. Eaton was the first pitcher to take on four innings this year.
“He threw well," Manager Bruce Bochy said. "It was a good effort. He kept the ball down better, his breaking ball was sharper and he had good location."
Jason Szuminski allowed the second run in the fifth off a Donnie Sadler home run. Scott Linebrink, Edgar Huerta, Brandon Puffer and Bart Miadich combined to throw four innings of scoreless ball. Linebrink, Huerta and Miadich each struck out two in their inning of work.
Notes: Look for the Padres to start the season with 12 pitchers according to Bochy. It was a move that was expected with the increased depth in the bullpen.
Kevin Towers was back in San Diego to catch Jered Weaver pitch in the Aztec Invitational. Weaver had an eight-inning gem where he allowed one hit, walked one and struck out 15.
Over 20 scouts, from various Major League teams, were on hand to watch the proceedings as the Long Beach State product whipped through the competition on the way to an easy 3-0 victory over UCLA.
According to a scout in attendance, “Weaver was hitting between 92-94 on the radar gun from the first inning through the eighth inning. His change was really making batters look silly out there. Anyone looking for a number one starter this year?”
In six games this season, spanning 43.2 innings, Weaver has allowed 17 hits, four earned runs, five walks for an ERA of 0.82. He has also struck out 70 during that span.
