The San Diego Padres today released infielder Donaldo Mendez. Mendez was on the forty man roster and with his departure the roster is steady at 37 players.

Donaldo Mendez, 25, batted .226 (19-for-84) with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in 26 games for the Padres last season. He spent the remainder of 2003 at Triple-A Portland, where he hit .226 (81-for-358) with 17 doubles, six homers and 36 RBI in 102 games.

Selected from Houston in the Major League Rule 5 Draft on December 13, 2000, Mendez appeared in 72 career games for the Padres, batting .183 (37-for-202) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 14 RBI.

With today's transaction, San Diego's 40-man roster stands at 37 players.

His inclusion on the 40-man roster was a surprise by most outside of the organization.
