Padres RHP Eaton wins his ninth

The San Diego Padres starting their final series of the season, and at Qualcomm with a 5-0 win over the Colorado Rockies. PETCO Park will officially open next season when the Padres christen their new venue on Opening Day.

Adam Eaton pitched seven shutout innings to get the win. Eaton (9-12) allowed four hits and one walk while striking out four to earn his first win in five starts for the Padres.

Scott Linebrink, Mike Matthews, Jay Witasick and Brandon Villafuerte closed the game out. The Rockies have now been shut out 11 times on the road, and 12 times overall.

In the second, Gary Matthews Jr. singled and moved to third on a hit by Khalil Greene. Matthews scored on a groundout by Gary Bennett to put the Padres up 1-0.

Brian Giels hit a ground rule double with one out in the third. After an error that allowed Phil Nevin to reach base, Xavier Nady singled to plate Giles. Matthews was walked to load the bases and Khalil Greene lined a shot to left that was ruled trapped by Jay Payton. Payton then forced out Matthews at second and Nady was tagged out at third.

Mark Kotsay broke added the last two runs with a two run double off Justin Speier, scoring Nady and Matthews to put the Padres up, 5-0.

Cory Vance allowed three runs, two earned in six innings ow work to take the loss. Vance (1-3) allowed six hits and four walks while striking out two.

Prospect watch:

Villafuerte needed 23 pitches to get out of a jam in the ninth. He struck out two, stranding runners on first and third.

With the bases loaded and one out in the first, Nady grounded into an inning ending double play. Nady then pulled a loss of power to his brain in the third. When Jay Payton trapped a ball hit off the bat of Greene, Nady raced to third and was tagged out. The ball had been thrown to second where Matthews was forced out and Nady did not have to advance.

Greene left five men on base for the game. He struck out swinging in the eight with two aboard and was on the losing end of the double play above.
