Padres RHP Lawrence gets his ninth win

The San Diego Padres were paced by a five RBI performance from Gary Bennet and Brian Lawrence went 7+ innings to get the win as the Friars scored 11 runs in the Colorado air.

Khalil Greene tripled to open the second inning, Bennett followed with a ground rule double just past the outstretched arm of Larry Walker, scoring Greene. Brian Lawrence hit a sac fly to right to move Bennett to third and with Ramon Vasquez up, the Rockies brought the infield in. Vasquez hit a fly ball to straight away center to score Bennett and put the Padres up 2-0.

Xavier Nady doubled with two outs in the third, but was stranded when Kotsay grounded out to first.

Phil Nevin hit a two run homer to centerfield in the fifth. The ball looked like a simple fly out to center, but it got caught in the Rocky Mountain air and continued to carry over the fence scoring Mark Loretta ahead of Nevin to make the score 4-0.

Jay Payton closed the score to 4-2 when he hit a down and away slider out of the park to the opposite field. Another Colorado home run as Payton did not look like he had enough wood on the ball to hit one out.

Cory Vance (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits in a losing effort for Colorado.

Larry Walker lost a ball, hit by Mark Loretta, in the sun in the seventh inning. With two runners already aboard, Loretta was credited with a double to score a run. Brian Giles was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs and Phil Nevin followed with a single to right, scoring the sixth Padres run. The bases remained loaded for Nady. After a pitch that sailed close to his head by Aaron Cook, the next pitch hit him in the hand to score run number seven. Mark Kotsay followed as Cook was replaced by Denny Stark. Kotsay grounded into a force out at home on a 3-1 pitch to bring up Greene. Greene popped out to the catcher and Bennet smoked a double past Payton who was playing in. The ball slipped out of the hand of Payton and it brought all three runners across the plate to push the score to 10-2. Brian Lawrence then got his second hit of the inning on an infield single.

Preston Wilson got one back when he took a belt high Lawrence pitch and hit a solo shot, his 35th of the year, to left field.

Lawrence (9-15) went 7-1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk.

Bennett drove in his fifth run of the game with a single in the ninth scoring Kotsay who doubled.

Every Padre in the starting lineup, including the pitcher, had at least one hit and one run scored, while five different players drove in runs.

Kotsay stranded seven runners on the day.
