Brian Lawrence (8-14) pitched seven strong innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out four. Brandon Villafuerte, up from Portland, pitched a scoreless eighth and Joe Roa pitched the ninth to secure the shutout. Villafuerte opened the season with the Padres, going 0-2 with two saves and a 4.60 ERA. After being sent down on June 9 following a right-shoulder strain, Villafuerte went 3-1 with 12 saves and a 1.80 ERA in 37 games with the Beavers.
The first ten runs the Padres scored were without the benefit of a homer. It wasn't until the eighth inning that Dave Hansen added a two run shot, runs 11 and 12 for the Friars.
After a walk by Mark Kotsay and Ramon Vasquez sacrificed him to second, Gary Bennett knocked in the first run with a single. After Brian Lawrence struck out and Bennett moved to second on a wild pitch, Sean Burroughs doubled to left center scoring Bennett. Mark Loretta followed with an RBI single and moved to second on the throw home. Brian Giles followed suit with another single to score Loretta. After Phil Nevin walked, Gary Matthews hit a triple and Kotsay knocked him in with a single before the inning came to an end. Lawrence had all the lead he needed and more as it was 7-0 at that point.
Miguel Batista (9-8) lasted just four innings in taking the loss.
Giles knocked in another run in the sixth and Nevin hit a sacrifice fly to score run nine.
Humberto Quintero had his first major league hit, a single to center in the seventh on the first pitch he saw.
Khalil Greene, the Padres' first-round pick in the 2002 draft, also made his big league debut, flying out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.
Ryan Klesko will have surgery Thursday morning on his sore right shoulder and will miss the rest of the season.
It was the Padres' 10th win in their last 14 games and the series sweep of Arizona gave the Padres their first season series win over the D-Backs since 1998.
