Padres Sean Burroughs to return to action
Padres Sean Burroughs to return to action

After unloading a good portion of their high-priced talent the resurgent Mets are winners of six games in a row. The Padres return from a brutal road trip in which they have lost the last five games.

Game One

RHP Kevin Jarvis (4-5, 5.62) and LHP Tom Glavine (8-11, 4.71)

The dog days of August are definitely hounding Jarvis. He has lost all three of his starts posting a brutal 11.40 ERA with a .384 batting average against. If Jarvis continues to be shelled by the opposition, Padres’ fans can expect a sixth loss in a row for the good guys.

Glavine is expected to go on three days rest and the Padres are hoping that it will make the former Cy Young award winner easier to beat. Glavine has won his last two starts, including six innings of shutout ball against the Rockies on August 15th.

Game Two

RHP Jake Peavy (9-9, 4.25) and RHP Aaron Heilman (2-5, 7.49)

Peavy struggled with giving up the long ball in his last outing giving up three to the NL’s most prolific home run hitting team. It broke up a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings for Peavy. Padre’s fans should expect that Peavy will be back in command.

Heilman is a 24 year old right-hander out of Notre Dame. This will be his tenth start in his rookie campaign. As the Mets have scuffled, so has this young pitcher. He does show promise and the Padres hitters have to remain patient as Heilman will give up the free pass.

Game Three

LHP Oliver Perez (4-6, 5.31) and RHP Jae Weong Seo (6-8, 4.32)

Perez turned 22 on his last outing and the Marlins did not wish him a happy birthday. Ollie definitely looked his age. He gave up 5 earned runs in 4 IP. He is questionable for his start because he took a ball off his left wrist off the bat of Ivan Rodriguez. Padres’ fans dread when they see Ollie fall off the mound. Forget about the fact he is not pitching as well or fielding his position well, he is unable to protect himself.

Seo has struggled since the All Star break. Seo started a game against the Padres back in May, and he allowed 3 runs in 5 IP in a no decision. Seo may be wearing down a bit, this is definitely not the guy that 1 hit the Marlins back in June.

Batters to Watch

Mark Loretta has had 2 consecutive games without a hit. He has only gone 3 games in a row without a hit only twice this season with the last time being back in June. Loretta has had decent success off of Glavine and even though he will be facing two pitchers he has never seen before, Loretta never gives away an at bat.

Mike Piazza does not look like he has missed a beat since returning from a severe groin injury. Piazza is hitting .400 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in 4 games. A guy should not be able to come off the shelf and rake the way Piazza has. The only bad news for Piazza is that Trevor Hoffman is still out. Piazza is one of the few guys that can claim he owns Hoffy (.438, 4 HR, 9 RBI).

Other Notes

Sean Burroughs should be returning to the lineup after being unable to start the last 4 games. Keep an eye on Jose Reyes the Mets rookie SS. This 20 year old switch hitter has the appearance of being the real deal and has a 17 game hitting streak coming into the series to back it up.
