Padres Lose 6-3

A solid outing by Brian Lawrence is wasted in the seventh inning as the Florida Marlins scored four runs, two off Lawrence and two off Jay Witasik to save Dontrelle Willis from taking a loss. The Padres loaded the bases in the ninth but Rondell White took a called third strike to end the game, a 6-3 loss.

Trailing 3-1, Juan Encarnacion led off the seventh with a double and later scored on Miguel Cabrera's single -- a hit that ended starter Brian Lawrence's night.

Cabrera moved to second on a groundout, and pinch-hitter Brian Banks walked with two outs to set the table for Juan Pierre.

The speedy outfielder drove a pitch from Jay Witasick (3-3) to deep center for his fifth triple, easily scoring Cabrera and Banks. Pierre then scored on Luis Castillo's single up the middle.

Pierre scored in the first after singling, stealing second and coming around on a Mike Lowell single.

Gary Bennett hit a two run homer in the fourth to give the Padres their 3-1 lead.

Pierre also saved two runs from scoring when he caught a ball 434 feet away from home plate off the bat of Ramon Vasquez in the sixth.

Braden Looper got his 24th save despite loading the bases in the ninth inning.

Notes:

Mark Loretta saw his 13 game hitting streak end after an 0-5 night.

Oliver Perez will not miss his scheduled start against the Mets on Thursday. Perez has a left wrist contusion suffered in yesterday's game when a ball off the bat of Ivan Rodriguez hit him.

Sean Burroughs will be back in the lineup Tuesday versus the Mets. He may be available to pinch hit this weekend.

The Minors:

The Portland Beavers had 15 hits Saturday night, including four by Yamid Haad and two each by Khalil Greene, Rico Washington, and Ben Howard as they beat Las Vegas 11-6. Washington is 4-for-7 with 3 RBIs since joining the Beavers on Friday.

The Mobile BayBears managed just three hits in a 3-1 loss to Huntsville.
