MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: July 27

Matt Wisler looks good in El Paso while San Antonio struggles on the road. Lake Elsinore, Fort Wayne and Eugene all lose but Robbie Erlin looks great on a rehab in the AZL.

Chihuahuas 4 - Fresno Grizzlies 3

Key Statistics:SS Everth Cabrera 1-3, BB; RF Jake Goebbert 3-3, 2B; 3 RBI, BB; P Matt Wisler 1-2; RHP Matt Wisler (W, 6-4) 6.0 IP 6 H 3 R 3 ER 7 Ks 2 HR; RHP Dennis O’Grady 2.0 IP; RHP Hector Ambriz (S, 11) 1.0 IP H BB.

Prospect Watch:Except for giving up a pair of solo home runs, Matt Wisler had a strong outing on Sunday. It was his second straight quality start, and with an exception of a few hiccups, he has been throwing very well for someone who doesn’t turn 22 until September...When most players get sent back down to the minors leagues it tends to negatively affect their performance. Not so with RF/1B Jake Goebbert who is now 6-7 with a pair of walks and three extra-base hits...In 13.1 innings in July RHP/RP Dennis O’Grady has an ERA of 0.68.

Prospect Watch:The Storm made a game of it by tacking on two runs in the eighth inning to close within one run but relief pitcher Nick Mutz gave up a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to seal it for the Blaze who retired the home side in order in the bottom of the ninth...Mallex Smith had his second game in right field tonight...SS Jose Rondon now has six hits in six games since coming over from the Angels in the Huston Street trade...C Dane Phillips is the only player that is nearly as hot as Cory Spangenberg with a .350/.409/.550 slash line in July...RHP Elliot Morris has been impressive in both his starts with Lake Elsinore. In 12 innings he has only allowed three earned runs.

Key Statistics:CF Ronnie Richardson 1-2, 2B 2 BB; 1B Luis Tejada 1-1; C Ryan Miller 0-2, 2 BB; SS Trea Turner 1-3, 2B; RHP Ronald Herrera (L, 5-6) 4.2 IP 7 H 3 R 3 ER BB 2 Ks; RHP Jorge Guzman 2.0 IP H BB.

Prospect WatchThe visiting team never scored more than a run an inning, the problem was they did it five times while the TinCaps could only mange to squeak out a run in the third and seventh...1B Jake Bauers offensive numbers have gone from .348/.426/.515 on July 1 to .314/.390/.453 on July 27, although he is still fifth overall in the Padres’ organization in batting and fourth in the Midwest League...When OF Ronnie Richardson gets a few more plate appearances he should be among the leaders in on-base percentage at .421.

Key Statistics:2B Jalen Goree 1-3, 2B; SS Franchy Cordero 1-4, SB (7); CF Auston Bousfield 1-4, 2B; DH Travis Jankowski 0-3, BB; RHP Zech Lemond 4.0 IP 5 H R ER 2 Ks; LHP Brandon Fry (L, 0-1) 1.2 IP 5 H 5 R 5 ER BB K HR.

Prospect WatchZech Lemond, a third round pick out of Rice this year profiles more a as a major league relief pitcher got his third straight starts with the Ems after beginning the year in the pen. He had his best and longest outing in the six appearances that he has made this year. At Rice Lemond was both started and came out of the bullpen...A clean game defensively for Franchy Cordero at shortstop...Between Auston Bousfield, Yale Rosen and Nick Torres, Eugene was supposed to have a very powerful offensive outfield. So far this year Torres has the best slash line at .250/.3-4/.375.

For further reading on the Emeralds, see the Eugene Register-Guard.

AZL Rangers 3 - AZL Padres 2

Key Statistics:LF Jordan Paroubeck 2-3, BB; RF Mason Smith 1-4, 2B; LHP Robbie Erlin 2.0 IP H 5 Ks; RHP Travis Remillard (L, 0-1) 1.0 IP 2 H 2 R; RHP Elvin Liriano 2.0 IP 2 Ks.

Prospect WatchHow good did Robbie Erlin look in his first game back from the disabled list? He got eight outs in two innings.

In the first inning he struck out the first batter, got the second one on a ground out to first base and would have retired the side in order except LF Jordan Paroubeck misplayed a fly ball. Erlin came back to strike out the next batter. In the second inning he struck out the first batter, but the catcher couldn’t handle the third strike so the runner advanced to first base. The next batter singled, which must have annoyed Erlin who then proceeded to strike out the next two which was followed by another weak ground out to the first baseman.

Two innings, four outs.
