MadFriars' Daily Farm Report July 23

Rymer Liriano makes his presence known in AAA, but it is Chihuahuas' Manager Pat Murphy who made the biggest headlines of the day. Elsewhere Turner has four hits in a loss, and both San Antonio and Eugene walk-off happy.

El Paso Chihuahuas 16 – Sacramento River Cats 7

Key Statistics: 2B Jedd Gyorko 2-4, HR (1), 2 RS, 2 RBI; RF Rymer Liriano 3-4, 2 2B, 4 RS, 3 RBI, BB; 1B Alex Castellanos 4-5, 2B, 2 RS, HR (6), 6 RBI; ECab PH 0-1; PH Alonso 0-1; LHP Jason Lane (W, 6-8) 6.0 IP 7 H 4 R 2 ER 4 Ks.

Prospect Watch Who needs the DH? In a surprising move El Paso manager Pat Murphy turned down the DH in favor of letting his pitcher, Jason Late, hit. Lane proceeded to go 3-3 hitting his third home run of the year. So not only did Lane throw six innings allowing only two earned runs, but he saw his batting average rise to .419!!

San Antonio Missions 5 – Corpus Christi Hooks 4

Key Statistics: RHP Justin Hancock 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 Ks; CF Cory Spangenberg 3-4, RS, 2 RBI; 2B Diego Goris 1-3, RS, RBI.

Prospect Watch Cory Spangenberg extended his hit streak to nine games, including four straight multi-hit games. Whats more he has shown the ability to play a solid centerfield in addition to second. Spangenberg has been the forgotten prospect as he has been out with multiple concussions, but we cant forget that entering the 2012 season he was ranked as the #1 second base prospect in baseball.

The Storm had the night off.

TinCaps 1 – Beloit Snappers 6

Key Statistics: RHP Jimmy Brasoban 6 IP, 3 H, BB, 6 K; SS Trea Turner 4-4; RF Franmil; Reyes 2-3, 2B, BB, Outfield assist (home).

Prospect Watch While Jason Lane’s .419 is incredible impressive, Trea Turner has to be hitting an equally as impressive .444/.512/.611 in Fort Wayne. Obviously nine games is a small sample size but five extra-base hits, four stolen bases, five walks, and only three strikeouts… incredibly impressive for the first round pick.

For further reading on the TinCaps, see the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette.

Ems 4– Tri City Dust Devils 3

Key Statistics: RHP Walker Weickel 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 Ks; CF Travis Jankowski 1-5, RS, SB; DH Franchy Cordero 2-4, RS, SB.

Prospect Watch A great walk-off win for the Ems. The Ems scored two in the bottom of the ninth thanks to newly rehabbing centerfielder Jankowski. After a Bousfield hit-by-pitch, Jankowski singled, then with Bousfield pulled off a double steal. The throw went into center, Bousfield scored, Jankowski to third. He then scored on a walk-off sac fly. Not a bad way to play your first ever game as an Emerald. (He went from AZL to Fort Wayne in 2012 than straight to Elsinore last year). .

For further reading on the Emeralds, see the Eugene Register-Guard.

AZL Padres 4 – AZL Giants 7

Key Statistics: RF Mason Smith 2-2, RS, 2 BB; SS Ruddy Giron 2-3, RS, BB; CF Michael Gettys 1-5.

Prospect Watch Since I complimented Carlos Belen on Monday on how well he was playing, he has proceeded to go 1-8 with 6 Ks… Despite not hitting for the great power we thought he would hit for, Gettys still has a .512 SLG percentage over his last ten games and has an .848 OPS for the year.
